Fashion is ever-changing and just the past 100 or so years has shown that trends certainly come and go and also build off of each other to the next decade. Every trend, even though changes or leaves, nothing fully stays gone forever.
1900’s: During the 1900’s women tended to wear tailored blouses and skirts. Corsets at this time were also worn underneath the blouses and skirts.
For men, their fashion usually consisted and depended on the time of the day. A sock/lounge coat was usually worn by men for formal affairs, and pants were usually shorter, tighter, and tailored. They also had dress shirts buttoned up the back instead of the front.
1910’s: During this decade women had large hats as a staple of their wardrobes. Large hats with big brims and short hair were very popular. They also tended to wear skirts and coats that were narrow at the ankle and high heels were common.
For men they wore suits and blazers and their pants were usually ankle length and cuffed.
1920’s: Casual wear became popular during the 20’s. Women had casual dresses with plaid and vertical stripes and solids. The flapper style was popular to get attention and for special occasions.
Men still had suits and sportswear with the increased popularity of sports. Sweaters and sweater vests were worn instead of the suit jacket as well.
1930’s: Fashion was heavily influenced by movies during this time. Longer hair for women was popular and dresses with floral patterns and makeup and curling irons were popular.
Men had fedoras and sports suits and cuffed pants. Less formal work clothes were worn greatly due to the Great Depression and rise in cost.
1940’s: Due to the war in this decade there were a lot of restrictions. Women’s clothing was now made of nylon, cotton, and rayon. Jackets, blouses, sweaters, and skirts were popular. Dresses were casual and pants became everyday clothing pieces.
Men were more casual this decade. Suits could now be bought without waistcoats. The cuffed look remained popular and jackets were longer and looser.
1950’s: Designers like Christian Dior, Cristobal Balenciaga, and Hubert de Givenchy became popular. Women liked sportswear and pants.
Men were more casual. Movie stars influenced the style. Jeans, white shirts, and leather jackets were popular. Slicked back hair and the rebellious style was big.
1960’s: Women wore tailored skirts, high heels and shift dresses and pants. In the late 60’s the hippie movement began and peace signs, tie dye, and bell bottoms were popular for men and women
1970’s: The hippie movement continued. Midi skies and maxi dresses were popular. Chokers, headbands, scarves, woods stones, feathers, and bead jewelry were go to accessories.
Men wore bell bottoms and satin shirts, tie dye and flannel shirts and bright colors. The casual style after the hippie movement became big and disco became popular at the end of the decade
1980’s: There was heavy influence by TV/ movies and music videos and celebrities. Neon colors, casual and exercise clothing were popular.
Men wore suit jackets and casual t-shirts and leather jackets and jeans and ray bans. Designers like versace, Ralph Lauren, and Calvin Klein were popular.
1990’s: Similar style to the 70’s was big. Denim and flannel shirts were worn. Versace, Guess, and Tommy Hilfiger were big designers.
2000’s: Fast fashion and the boho style were increasing in popularity. Asymmetrical tops, skirts, maxi skirts and low rise jeans and crop tops for women. The hipster fashion and brands like zara, H&M, and Forever 21 started increasing in popularity.
2010’s: Casual, jeggings, athleisure and formal fashion. Heavy influence by British royal family and there was a large emphasis on individuality. High waisted pants were big
2020’s: Covid’s athleisure and activewear style really took off. Fashion of late 90’s and early 2000’s made a comeback . People started rejecting form fitting clothes and puffer jackets were big. High waisted was out. Crocs made a huge dive and cruelty free clothing was popular.
