The rise of Fast Fashion

Fast fashion is a model that involves rapidly designing, producing, and selling trendy clothing at low prices. The goal is to make clothing available to consumers quickly and cheaply. Fast fashion encourages consumers to buy a lot of clothing and only wear it a few times before throwing it away.

In the 1970’s, retailers started outsourcing production of clothing to countries with lower labor costs.

in the 1990’s the term “fast fashion” emerged along with online shopping .

In the late 1990’s fast fashion became more popular as consumers were now spending more on clothing and wanted trendy items at low prices.

The environmental impact of fast fashion has led to an increased consumption and disposal clothing with the average number of wears in a piece of clothing as gone down. These clothes are made of lower quality materials like synthetic fibers, polyester, and nylon which all shed microplastics into the environment.

There is also the concern of the exploitation of workers in fast fashion. There have been many brands accused of using manipulative techniques to encourage overconsumption.
